Dear Parents, Guardians, Community Members, and Ram Fans,
Although I have met many of you at school and sporting events, now that the school year is well underway and I am beginning to settle in, I would like to take a minute to introduce myself and say a few words about this school year. I am honored to have been appointed as the new principal of South Haven High School. After moving to the area and meeting a few parents and community members, I quickly realized not only will this be a great opportunity for me and my family, but what a perfect fit South Haven will be! To the many who have made me and my family feel so welcomed already, thank you! We are excited to be here!
I moved to South Haven with my wife Melanie, son Hayden (15) and daughters Maddelyne (12) and Ava Grace (5). All three of my children are in different buildings, so between school and sports it did not take long to learn the shortcuts around town. We moved to sunny and warm South Haven after spending 7 years in the frozen tundra of the Upper Peninsula where I was principal of Stephenson High School and obtained my Master’s Degree in Education / Supervision & Instruction from Northern Michigan University. Prior to the U.P. we lived in the Milwaukee area where I obtained a Bachelor’s Degree from Maranatha University and a degree in Police Science before serving in law enforcement for almost 14 years.
Now a new journey begins; not only for me and my family, but for South Haven Schools. Thanks to the community for the passing of the bond proposal this past spring. Currently we are beginning the planning and early implementation stages for many instructional and building initiatives. Not only will the physical structure of our building change, but instruction, programming, and the culture inside our building will also change. A partnership with Project Lead the Way, which will help us provide rigorous curriculum in the areas of science, technology, engineering, and math, and Direct Interactive Instruction, which will change the way teachers teach and students learn, are just a few of the major initiatives being implemented. As the year unfolds I will update the Principal’s Message area of this web site and you will be able to read much more about these implementation processes and many others.
In addition to new programming we have many new members on our team including Assistant Principal Mr. Jeremy Burleson and Technology Instructional Coach Mrs. Danielle Hendry. We have several other new faces on our teaching staff, and are working closely with a graduation coach, regional special education supervisor, and members of the Van Buren County Intermediate School District. I look forward to working with all of these individuals as their expertise and backgrounds have already paid dividends to our teachers, students, and educational programming.
This journey together is just starting out, and I hope when you visit our building you begin to already notice some changes. I would like to invite all of our parents and community members to join us on this exciting journey. Educating our children and training them to be successful, responsible, and influential citizens takes a tremendous amount of effort on all of our parts. I look forward to the exciting new changes we will be experiencing together and hope to have you a part of the process.
